The FDSA trade show attracts hundreds of professionals who are the decision-makers in the funeral services industry.

Ben Schmidt | Worsham College of Mortuary Science

Ben Schmidt is the lead instructor at Worsham College of Mortuary Science where he teaches Embalming, Restorative Art, Funeral Directing, and Funeral Service History. He also oversees the Embalming, Anatomy, and Restorative Art Labs. In addition to his duties at the college, he is the co-author of Creating Natural Form: Restorative Art Theory and Application, co-creator of the MorTraqr task tracking app, and host of The Funeral Science Podcast. 


Session Title: Embalming Chemicals in the Wild 

We are often told that embalming chemicals are poisonous and damaging to the Earth, but how much of that is actually true? Join Ben as he examines this statement and discusses embalming chemicals and their uses outside of the prep room.


Yvonne Slonaker, CCrE, CFuE | Spring Grove Funeral Homes

Yvonne Slonaker has served her community with funeral and cremation services for over 24 years as a licensed funeral director. In March of 2020 she joined The Tribute Companies team as the Director of Business Development. During the fall of 2021, Slonaker accepted a position with Spring Grove Funeral Homes.

Session Title: Are Lawyers Friend or Foe? Dissecting the Law on Practical HR Situations


As an employer/manager, are you at wits end with HR matters disrupting day-to-day operations? Do you have an employee handbook? Are its policies and procedures helping or hindering you from dealing appropriately with bad behavior? Are you unknowingly undermining your company culture? It is important to have a basic understanding of how to react when you are confronted with different HR situations. This interactive session will present HR scenarios that will help you think on your feet and exercise prudent judgment while keeping you out of court.  




William Sean Sweetman, MBIE

William Sean Sweetman, better known as Sean, is a graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science, graduating in 1990. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Illinois. Sean is the Chicago and Northern Illinois Dodge Company sales rep. When he is not on the road serving his clients, Sean serves as a Clinical Instructor of Anatomy Dissection and Embalming at Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He also serves on the college’s Advisory Board.


Sean is a certified Crematory Operator, having achieved certification through the Cremation Association of North America. He is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, as well as the Funeral Directors Association of Greater Chicago where he served as secretary-treasurer for ten years. He is a member of the British Institute of Embalmers and currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of the North American Division of the British Institute of Embalmers. Always willing to be of service, Sean also is a member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association, as well as a member of the Northeastern Funeral Directors Association.

Session Title: Tissue Gas, Preventing a Disaster


In this course we will cover how to properly embalm in order to prevent the onset of tissue gas as well as treating and embalming a known tissue gas case.
